ESPN: You stink.

I love the fact that a Purdue guy, Drew Brees is one of, if not the biggest story in the NFL, if not all American sports right now. I love even more that Drew has fought through difficulty and adversity to get to where he is right now. His nearly flawless 5-touchdown performance last week was a thing of beauty. If you're a Purdue fan, you've known Brees was a great one for a long time...But our pals at ESPN seemed to have just figured this out. On behalf of Drew, thanks, but no thanks ESPN.

At the beginning of the season, as the Falcons won a few games, Michael Vick was finally becoming the NFL Hall of Famer that "The Worldwide Leader" made him during his years as a Hokie. As Mr. Mexico struggled and his team fell in the standings, so did his status among the NFL's elite, according to the pundits in Bristol.

Next, Tony Romo astounded and amazed Chris Berman and Co. and proved to the world (by the world, I mean Berman and Jackson) that Parcells was still a genius. Well, after 7 games as a starter, Tony Romo's bust for Canton has been casted and now shattered. Last week, following the Cowboys loss (to Brees' Saints, ironically) one of ESPN's NFL panel members said the league had "figured Romo out" and that he was only a "solid" NFL quarterback. Say it ain't so, fellas!!! I thought Tony was the savior of America's team?!?!

Well, this week's Greatest Quarterback Ever is Purdue's ole number 15; Drew Brees. Brees deserves all of the credit he's receiving...but I'm going to go ahead and rely on less-fickle media outlets than ESPN to tell me that I was right all along about my opinion of Drew Brees. Brees is and always has been a winner...he's also always been a guy who can make the big throw, but he does throw costly interceptions at times as well, because he believes he can complete every pass. While the remaider of the Saints schedule may not put another game in the right-hand column for them...it probably will provide ESPN a chance to knock Brees off the top of their standings as the newest king. The only question now is who's next? Girrard, Rivers, Palmer (again) , Manning (again...you pick which one) or Brady (again).

Brees is a winner, plain and simple. Everyone would always talk about his height and lack of arm strength. We heard it over and over when the Chargers drafted Rivers. When he was leading Purdue to the Rose Bowl, ESPN was all about Vick. When Brees moves to downtown New Orleans to be a part of the city and help it rebuild, ESPN wants to talk about how great Reggie Bush is for all he's done for New Orleans. All the credit is long overdue. Brees is a great QB, great teammate, and a great individual.

ESPN is a TV Network, and as such they mostly care about ratings. So they search for any rags to riches story that they can find. Anytime, some quarterback has to fight through "adversity" they make the ESPN headlines. One wishes, they would just look at the results of a player on the field, but that is wishful thinking. Even when they do find great quarterbacks to talk about, they are not going to continue to talk about them long, that would be bad for the ratings. In summary ESPN is about two things: Political Correctness, and Ratings.

Brees looks good in Black and Gold, again. Don't ya think?

Brandon -- Drew Brees is only about 5'10", not 6'5" like Peyton Manning (smaller than the prototype gunslinger). Drew Brees was a standout high schooler in Texas and blew out his knee his junior year of college (adversity). He then wasn't offered scholarships by anyone in Texas (disrespect, etc.) so he went to Purdue who made it clear they wanted him. He then took Purdue, a perennial bottom-half-of-the-Big-Ten team to the Rose Bowl in a season where they had comeback wins against both Ohio State and Michigan (rags to riches? overcoming adversity?).

Then he barely keeps his job last year with the Chargers after an amazing 2004 season -- almost losing his job to Rivers, who hadn't played a down yet. Then this past year he IS cast aside in favor of Rivers. And then instead of going to Miami, he opts for New Orleans, a gamble by any stretch. And it culminates (to this point) on Monday night when he absolutely dismantles the high-flyin', overrated Cowboys on MNF.

Plus, he has family issues and he and his mom don't speak with one another.

I don't know but I think that all sounds like a lot of human interest, rags to riches, adversity, puzzling, ambitious, driven, etc., lots of adjectives. I know you're not defending ESPN's choices, but I agree with boilerdowd and others who say let's stop hearing about Michael Vick and Tony Romo. They'll win the games they're supposed to win. Brees will surprise you againa and again.

Paul - yes, but I wish he went back to #15. Much better QB number.

I'm just saying that ESPN isn't the place to look for great commentary. I wasn't really saying anything about Brees. As you have said Brees is a great story as well as a great quarterback. I don't know why ESPN hasn't been talking about him, but I am saying that ESPN isn't the place to look for such accolades. I agree with you, that they should talk about Brees, but I was just trying to point out that great commentary isn't ESPN's prime motivation.

Brees is a great story and a great quarter back. If it was not for HD, ESPN would not be worth watching. What am I saying? I am saying I watch ESPN for Erin Andrews in HD.

I currently have about 6 non-ESPN sports networks on my cable and none of them have half of the picture quality or sound quality that ESPN have...even worse, none of them have Erin Andrews.

I still love Suzy Kolber. Even in HD where you can tell she's got cracks in the foundation.

As a follow up, I noticed that just yesterday the Kissing Suzy Kolber guys posted a humorous and accurate account of how Brees is already the best QB in Saints history. Don't believe it? Check out their post here:

They also point out how Brees has a cool name and a hot wife so life must be good for him. All accurate.

J - if you are a starting QB in the NFL, you better have a smokin' hot wife. If I were a coach, I wouldn't start a QB unless his wife and/or girlfriend (this is the NFL, let us not forget) was smokin' hot. Erin Andrews would be the base model. Is that shallow? Yes, yes it is.

The nanny better be smokin' hot as well...

As of this morning, it is now Vince Young. He will not deliver the Titans to the Promise Land. He will win the rookie of the year award. He will lead the NFL for years to come...

I think you're right Paul...Plus, I clearly jinxed Brees and Purdue's basketball team.
