"Pro" Football At Ross-Ade?

Why am I always the last one to know about these things? It appears that the All American Football League, an upstart league wishing to capitalize on the football void left for those people for whom the Arena League just isn't enough, has signed an agreement to put one of their franchises in Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, IN.

According to the site, "the League will employ all players and coaches and will establish a system of allocating talent among the Teams, striving to match players with their alma mater."

Does this mean we could see Billy Dicken or Rick Trefzger throwing short-hops again, or Travis Dorsch booming punts and wickedly shanking field goal attempts? Only time will tell.

The AAFL is also holding national tryouts at Ford Field in Detroit on September 13 -- no word yet on how many of the Lions have already been cut.

Myles Brand thinks the AAFL is a "fascinating idea." Brand also thinks his belly button is "fascinating," though.

An interesting thing about this league is that each team needs an "Advisory Board" and, apparently, anybody can apply to sit on such a board. The site says that the league "will consider all qualified individuals." What qualifies someone to sit on an Advisory Board for a semi-professional football team? I don't know but I'll do my best to keep you posted. I've submitted my application to be on the Board for the franchise currently labeled "Purdue" (one assumes a team name will eventually be attached to this franchise should the league actually get off the ground). The photo they show in the above link just makes it look like such a happy bunch. Maybe it's the old-school football lithograph in the background. Who knows?

The AAFL is a "professional football league," not a semi-pro league. The AAFL will be the best league this side of the NFL. It'll have the best talent, it'll pay the best salaries... on average, it'll play in the best venues and in the most fan-frenzied locations for college football on the planet. This will be better than NFL-Europe, better than Arena, and better than anything else going on in the spring. Each team will comprised of favorite players from the region they'll be playing in. These are players who were once held high by each school's fans. It'll have six teams, and each team will be supplemented with players from the rest of the country. The best players from Southern Cal, from Notre Dame, from Penn State, from Florida St., from Miami, S. and N. Caroliina, from Boston College, and so on. They'll all be reprented in the AAFL. It won't play in the fall and it won't compete with the NFL, the NCAA, nor high school football. It'll allow more people to attend more games. It'll create fans who don't get a chance to see live games at sold out NFL and major colleges. It's good for all the forms of the sport. It'll bring dormant stadiums to life in the spring and bring revenue to these communities. The players will get a second chance at following their dreams. Former NFL players will be a part of the league. Its requirement of a college degree has already sent many players back to college so they're elligible to play. The NCAA should love this aspect. And the NFL too. But mostly, the fans will love this.

Wow...a post by Morgan Burke & Miles Brand on our very own website- neato!

While I am a huge fan of:
-Football
-Purdue
-Purdue athletes who get their degree
-College athletes who get their degree

I am not so sure if this reply by "anonymous" Brand is completely accurate. The players will not be the best player from SC, PSU, Purdue et al. Those players, in fact will be playing in the fall for the NFL. Further, many of the speed players might already be under contract for the Arena League.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more football being played...but the company line above is simply not completely accurate.

Players that play for the team that plays in Ross-Ade will also not only be ex-Purdue players...they will be regional-specific. So, let's say Purdue's last few quarterbacks are unavailable because they're in the league...How does Matt LoVecchio at the helm of the team sound to Purdue fans? Not attractive? Not to me...but a similar situation could occur. Kirsch is "sans" degree & in the AFL, Orton is backing up the worst starting QB in the NFL, Brees is an MVP down in New Awlins...Maybe Hance is available?

Much like Rocky says, I'll check it out when it starts...but I'm a guy who watches football at 1:00 am between two WAC teams that I have no attachment to...I think it's going to be a tough sell to the average fan. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm silly enough to watch it. But then again, I watched 1 game of the XFL and quit after seeing "He Hate Me". All I need to say is that it better be better than the XFL or it won't last a full season.

Ooh ooh, one more thing...some might argue that "pro" football players have been playing in Ross-Ade every few years or so. tO$U comes back to town this year too!

It's amazing to me that just a few hours after putting up that post, people surfed in and found it. I guess the PR people for the AAFL are Google-searching all day long.

I'm excited about this new league. Football in spring will make my life complete. Not only that, I would like to see the college players who weren't drafted play again. Not every good college player goes pro. Bring it on AAFL. I will go to the games!

And the PR machine rolls on.

Let's see- we've had...uh, zero women just "stop by" the site...now we've got one for the AAFL.

Thanks Miles, urrr AAFL intern, urrr gamegirl.

It is an interesting concept for sure, though there are quite a few "interesting concept" football leagues that obviously didn't make it very far. I'm hopeful that it will motivate some guys to go back to school to get their degree, and I'm sure that I'll check it out when it kicks off next spring.
