After Monday night football last night, Sportscenter went immediately back to the Superdome where they had a crack team of clowns onsite to break down the Saints third straight loss to open the season. They showed some of the early highlights and Emmitt Smith decided that faking a handoff to Reggie Bush during a kick return and other such modes of deception were "gimmick plays." Now, never mind that faking a handoff on a play from scrimmage is simply considered "play-action," it's what Emmitt said next that I particularly enjoyed:
"I don't like gimmick plays because when they don't work, they're just a wasted play."
Right. As opposed to when you run a traditional, smash-mouth draw play that doesn't work. When that happens, your team is awarded three points because your play was "non-gimmick" and thus, not wasteful.
Idiot.

I pretty much have a difficult time watching MNF anymore, not with that cast ESPN has put together. K. Johnson is a little better than I. Johnson, but the outfits are just as colorful.
If you had to pick three guys to call MNF, who would they be?
I still think Al Michaels is one of the best football play-by-play guys ever. Nantz is good, too.... Nantz and Simms on CBS is terrific because neither of them are idiots and actually tell you insightful things. Unlike John Madden and many, many others... Madden is just a cartoon at this point. BOOM!
So I guess I might say a team of Al Michaels, Phil Simms and Ron Jaworski would probably be a terrific booth. That said, Jaws is a huge improvement over moronic Thees-man.
I can't stand Simms.
Really? Simms just knows that game so well and is clearly bright... I just hate the random babble most color analysts put out there, speaking in cliches, not doing research, and just basically making crap up as they go along. For an obvious example, see the gong show of an announcing team that handled the Purdue-Minny game last weekend.
And Jaworski doesn't give you random babble?
I'm okay with Al Michaels. I also like Daryl Johnston. Except for the few odd remarks, he's not too annoying.
