The Boilermakers football bowl position has been established and they narrowly avoided warm destinations like Tempe, AZ (Insight Bowl) and Fort Worth, TX (Armed Forces Bowl). That's right, they've made it into that outpost of bowl games -- the Motor City Bowl.
I'm not sure whose idea it was to start having bowl games in frigid locations, but it's one of those ridiculously terrible ideas that has inexplicably spread in way one might expect a good idea to spread. The International Bowl in Toronto, the Humanitarian Bowl in Idaho, and the Motor City Bowl in lovely Detroit.
Perhaps the included picture should be the logo for the Motor City Bowl -- at least it would make people feel warm.
As a soon-to-be transplant to Texas, I was prepared to make the journey to Southwestern bowl game destinations -- such as Houston for the Texas Bowl, Ft Worth for the Armed Forces Bowl, El Paso for the Sun Bowl, or even Tempe for the Insight Bowl. But now our Boilermakers wil be in balmy Detroit instead... and as such, I think my midwestern counterparts should be onsite to report for Boiled Sports in Detroit.
How about it, boys?

At least the game is in a Dome...
Whoa man...that's twice you've stolen my thunder. Good post though.
In the Motor City Bowl swag? Plane tickets home
I will gladly buy boilerdowd a ticket if he goes! Yes, I will make that sacrifice in honor of the hours of entertainment this site has given me.
Hey, did you guys happen to hear old Lou Holtz telling everyone watching ESPN how to cheat, er, avoid, NCAA rules? Oh it was classic.
I was just discussing this- It would take someone driving me there and back, paying for my ticket (good seats between the 30s too...none of that upper-level or corner garbage) to get me to go. I would also like a meal or two and possibly an icy cold Sam Adams Winter Lager.
My point is...It's probably not going to happen. I went to the North American Auto Show two years ago...I'm a car guy, and I can say that my visit to Detroit was one of the worst short trips I've ever taken. Detroit stinks.
Look on the bright side. At least Purdue can win a bowl game now.
Maybe.
I only give them a 60% chance of winning actually.
Hell. They might lose.
What's wrong with the Humanitarian Bowl? Don't you like the Smurf Turf?
We should come up with a new bowl - specifically for Purdue. We can get the good people that make Taser to sponsor it and have it in East St. Louis. Sweet.
Sorry b-dowd... I had no idea you were posting, too. In fact, when I refreshed, I saw nothing, so you must have been in progress. You can always log in and change the date/time of your post, you know...
no big deal...I'm just starting to get a bit of a complex...
Sorry, you'd have to get whatever Purdue gives me. From my experience at the Outback and Rose Bowls, your seats would suck. I've never been to Detroit and I'd like to keep it that way.
Detroit is not a good place to visit! Save yourselves!
From my experience at the Outback Bowl, all bowl games suck, and we can't hold leads, and, um ... I forget the rest, but apparently they serve beer at bowl games. Or did.
On the bright side, an indoor game in December is actually quite warm (I've been to a few Colts games and even wasted money on Lions season tickets one year in the Silverdome).
Also, parking for Ford Field can't possibly be as bad as parking for the Silverdome was. That was like going to an IU game, with the same number of exits but ten times the number of people. (The one time I saw a game in Candlestick, we parked a ways from the stadium, but it was worse there. Anarchy.)
At least we have a chance. Could be worse. (See: Michigan.)
Some good points, but even though you're a Lions fan, you'd probably concede that there is little to do in Detroit before/after the game. I do hear that Ford is a nice stadium, but just because it's a nice stadium doesn't mean there should be a bowl game there.
Also, if Michigan loses, no one is surprised or angry as Florida is simply a much better team (better record in a better conference)...but, Purdue plays a team with a similar record from a much worse conference. Our Boilers are expected to win. So, if they do, no big deal...but if they lose, it'll be a big deal for a MAC team to beat a BT team in the post-season. Pretty crappy, in my opinion.
MAC Champ versus Big Ten #7 never did make much sense. You get a down-on-the-luck Big Ten team there almost every year against a team from a punchy conference that has just won their title and is presumably playing well. As bdowd said, no upside there.
