Coach Sanctions Quickly Erasing 50 Years of IU's Good Standing

Well, it's front-page news now over at ESPN.com. Kelvin Sampson has a new slew of violations, being termed "major," against him.

And while we all dislike IU here, I don't think you've ever heard us suggest their athletic programs were dirty... that is, until Coach Sanctions showed up and brought his baggage with him.

Sampson is known to have made almost 600 illegal recruiting phone calls while at Oklahoma and then, while on probation for that, he went and made roughly 100 more improper calls in his first year at IU. Solid!

IU has already done the old, force-out-the-assistant-and-let-him-take-the-fall routine, when Coach Senderhoff "resigned" his position in October. Now what?

"We are extremely disappointed in these new allegations regarding coach Sampson," [Athletic Director] Greenspan said in a statement. "To say the least, we view these allegations with grave concern."

Not good, IU, not good at all. Again, I dislike IU with all my being but when it's becoming clear that you always ran clean programs and that your reputation is being sullied constantly by an unscrupulous coach... well, what do you do? Isn't cutting ties with that coach a good first step?

Maybe Jim Harrick's available.

Isn't it just like IU to steal our thunder like that. They didn't even play yesterday and yet they steal the spotlight.

Doesn't help that Kentucky got pounded either.

IU has the NCAA knife hanging over them, Kentucky looks like a POS, and Purdue just keeps on winning. Oh, happy times!

I think they may have to self-impose their own post-season ban... or something... Although they say the violations haven't affected current student athletes. So what is the potential solution, then, to this matter?

And the worst part is that Sampson lied to the NCAA about this 3 months ago saying he didn't knowingly participate in any 3 way calls. Recruits' parents have no motivation to lie to NCAA investigators and are much more credible than Sampson. And there's also that little thing about cultivating an atmosphere of non-compliance. He is cooked.

From a story on Rivals.com:

Here is a summary of the allegations:

Sampson knowingly participated in three-way phone calls with Senderoff and prospects Yancey Gates, William Buford, DeJuan Blair, Demetri McCamey, Ayodele Coker and Devin Ebanks. He also participated in speakerphone calls with Senderoff and prospect Marcus Morris.

Sampson was present during one or more recruiting calls placed by Senderoff to prospect Kenny Frease in which Senderoff made phone calls to the student-athlete, then handed the phone to Sampson. Sampson also spoke with the mother of prospect Bud Mackey via Senderoff's cell phone while Senderoff was with Mackey's mother.

Records showed Senderoff also used his home phone for impermissible recruiting calls on a number of occasions despite Senderoff telling investigators that he had not used his home phone for recruiting calls. In fact, Senderoff placed at least 30 phone calls that were violations from his home phone.

Sampson and Meyer impermissibly recruited Elston during a two-day sports camp June 30 and July 1, 2007. During that event, Meyer told Elston's high school coach, Travis Daugherty, that Elston would be receiving a scholarship offer from Indiana in the near future. Elston, however, had not completed his activities in the camp, which made contact with him impermissible, and Elston returned to camp activities the following day. It was during this contact that Elston received the t-shirt and backpack in violation of NCAA rules.

Seems to me that when Meyer and Senderoff are BOTH implicated that means to me that Sampson was behind it all... I don't think two coaches would willingly continue to break rules if there wasn't some motivation behind it.

Of course they wouldn't. It seems pretty crystal clear to me who the bad apple is in all of this.

J- Nice tweak at the end...ZING!

I'm super-pleased with the timing of this...IU gets all of the pub, Purdue gets back to the grind and prepares for the home stretch. Plus, the local and national media that would have been pestering Hummel & Co. are now camping in Bloomington waiting for Emeril & Eric Jordan to make a statement. Neato!

Dukie V's been talking about this throughout the entire Duke/MD game. "It's a shame, baby!!!"

In the next breath, he made some positive comments about Hummel and Moore! It was totally out of nowhere too, so I guess Purdue has really made an impression finally, for better or worse. If they're not careful, Dukie V might even decide Purdue is a worthwhile stop on his revival tour.

Hold on a second, Nate. What games do they have at Mackey that could attract Dukie V? Minnesota? Erm, nope. Northwestern? You gotta be kidding me. Now, he was at Mackey when Glenn Robinson was playing, and he still might end up covering the Boilers, but it won't be at Mackey.

You're right, there are no decent home games left. I wasn't really serious though - I don't think he'll ever come to Purdue. There's just too many ACC games in any given year. Just wanted to point out that he's actually talking about Purdue/IU again. I'll be sure to put a bunch of :):):) next time so you don't take me at face value :)

You laugh at NW now, but what if Bob Knight took over? He's not done, not even close. :)
