What's next?

With Dawson deciding to play for Izzo, who will fill the two spots that remain after Donnie Hale takes his scholarship in 2011?

Randle and Zeller would obviously good-gets...but I think Zeller isn't coming to West Lafayette and Randle doesn't seem to be leaning in any particular direction.

Let's not kid ourselves, Dawson deciding to play for someone other than Matty, in the BT no less, stings quite a bit. Like many if you, I didn't really like how he was handling his recruitment, but I would have gotten over that had he chosen Purdue. He'll probably be very good in East Lansing...and we'll all be regularly reminded of his talent. But everyone has got to move on.

Make no mistake, Hale will be good for Painter, so that class will be worth while. But who else will sign?

Since so many high-level players in the class if '12 have Matty high on their list, it seems to make good sense to save one for that class...regardless if Randle signs or not.

It's a crushing hit. In all honesty, it may be what keeps us moving from "very good" to "great." We need one of those top 25 caliber guys to bump us to that next level. Until we get another GRob, I don't know if we will get there...

I didn't even know MSU was on his list... Izzo find some pocket change in the past few days?

I agree with Ryan F. This hurts. To be the perennial powerhouse we all want to be (and certainly can be), we need to land recruits like BD. This stings a lot, but you’re right. We have no choice but to move on and play the hand we are now dealt. It’s time to squeeze the most out of what we have.

You can’t fault the guy for wanting to play for Izzo. Losing to Izzo, is always respectable. If we lost to Marquette and Buzz Williams (which looked to be our main competition for awhile), then MP would have some explaining to do. I can swallow this rock, but it hurts all the way down.

I don't buy into the 'we NEED one of those top-25 guys to take us to the next level,' but considering Painter went all-out for Dawson, it leaves a gaping hole in 2011.

If we could reel in Chasson Randle, all will not be lost. Randle appears to be a great fit character-wise. His priorities right now are acedemics, and unlike every other prospect, it's not just lip service. IMO, I feel more comfortable with what Randle will bring to the TEAM than Dawson.

It still hurts though. Especially considering what he's been saying the last month.

What hurts the most is that we lost him to a clean program that does it the right way...the program we WANT to be.

FF every year or so, BT champs every year or so...

We're so close, so very close to this...

But, this bitch slap reminds us that we are NOT there yet.

First of all, never say ANYONE in college sports is for sure clean. Even us.

Second, Zeller narrowed to IU, Butler, and NC. He gone.

It looks like we offered some Texas kid Jonaton Davis, but I doubt we get him. This surely blew up in our face. At least he didn't wait until March like he said he would.

I was looking forward to watching this kid rip boards all over the place, however, I totally don't blame him for going to MSU and playing for a great coach there. I wonder how the new Mackey renovation will affect future recruiting? Large perspective, it's great to know we've locked down Painter for a long time, and that this program still continues to take steps in the right direction.

this bites. if we can't land top talent under these cirumstances:
1. we had a head start on, from what i've gathered.
2. we have greatly improved facilities on teh way
3. more press/coverage/love than we've had in over a decade
4. young, likeable coach who is going to stay long-term
5. close to home, with parents on paper liking purdue
6. most big 10 championships, etc
....
it makes me sick that we can't land a top 25 recruit with all of that. f.o.l.

Listen, I'm going to say what everybody is dancing around. Until Painter can close the deal on a 5 star recruit, Purdue will never be an elite program. They'll be good, probably in the tourney most years, but never a threat to make a serious run to the final four. This kid was in our most fertile recruiting area. Painter was all over him for years and still couldn't get it done. Can you imagine Painter signing a top 20kid out of Flint, Mi. that Izzo really wanted? No way! You can forget Randle too. Unlike Painter, Weber has been signing the instate recruits he wants and Randle will be another. It's pretty apparent now that 2007 class was an abberation that will not be repeated. Look at 2008? 2009? 2010 is EHH (4th in the Big Ten) and 2011? Well it depends on which JC transfer we can convince to come.

BC, did you just call a nationally-top-10 recruiting class EHH?

The sky is not falling, nor has it fell. Not getting Dawson is not good...we'll know in a few years how costly it really was.

boilerdowd, that nationally-top-10 ranking was from very early in the recruiting process, in June of 2009. When the recruiting ended a couple months ago, we weren't even in the top 25 according to ESPN. We have three very good players coming in, but not having Donne Hale coming in hurts the ranking. That and the fact that school rankings shift. Tons of schools (including Kentucky) passed us as they locked in top-notch recruits in the last few months and weeks. As Beano's Cook says, it's just an ok class as it's behind OSU, MSU, and Illinois in the Big Ten. I'm not saying that I'm not excited about the new players, because I am, I'm just saying that I would stop calling it a top-ten class.

You beat me to it wassaw. Actually, Purdue's 2010 class is unranked in ESPN, Rivals & Scout. That's three straight unranked years and 2011 is looking bad. After the big three leave, this team is going to slide. Is that what it's going to take for alums to wake up and realize there's a recruiting issue here? Listen, I love Painter as a bench and locker room coach but it is becoming apparent that he got lucky in 2007 and that may be why he has an out in his contract after this year.

boilerdowd said...

I don't think he got lucky, I think a number of factors played in the landing of that class. Those guys all seemed like good fits coming in and all really wanted to come to Purdue and really wanted to play together. Cuonzo's importance as a recruiter, I don't think, should be discounted. Even without Martin, the class of '07 is impressive, especially when looking from where we are now, but without him, their ranking would definitely fall.

The circumstances of this years signing class are pretty tough- Marcius' redshirt forced Hale to become a prep school player and as a result, the class got knocked down...Anthony Johnson battling injuries and not being able to play for stretches didn't help. But, Hale will be a Boilermaker and will be a great fit with the system, but a year later...I'm not sure how Carroll will work out, since he's not as athletic. But AJ will probably better than his final HS ranking.

There are a couple of guys who have signed in the past few seasons that I've questioned a bit...and, specifically, the class of '08 almost looks like a different school and conference's class, but I think the jury is still out on many of the players that you both might be ready to deem as not great because of their class ranking.

I think a true bluechip player would probably help the program. A McDonald's AA, some say is an absolute must if a team is to make it to the Final Four or become a national champ. But, they're not a guarantee. Guys like Luther Clay, Mike Robinson, Cam Stevens & Jamaal Davis quickly remind me that McDs AAs and top-50 rankings aren't guarantees for success at all.

I don't think I nor anyone else thinks recruiting is as good as it can be. BUT, I have an awfully hard time picking too much apart within the program as this team is near the eve of its most-anticipated season in over 15 years.

Plus, an awful lot of very talented players seem to be interested in Purdue for the '12 & '13 classes...but I don't think there's any reason at all to put too much stock in something so far off.

You guys can fret away this coming season, I'm not going to.
