aOSU Predicto

The stars align poorly for Purdue this week. Our Boilers head into the horseshoe as a sizable underdog for good reason- The Bucknuts typically win their Homecoming Games plus, Tressel's only lost two straight games three times while in Columbus. Plus, the Vest surely has been reminding his squad what happened last year in Ross-Ade for much of the week.

What will happen? Here's what we think:

J says:

Purdue wins 26-18 -- I've seen this one before.

Sorry, no, I'm drunk again. Purdue makes us proud in defeat. Hard for third stringers to compete with the best big ten team money can...I mean...RECRUITING can get.

Tim says:

Ohio State is favored by 23. I don't think they'll win by quite that much, but I do think they'll win. In order for Purdue to pull the upset here the defense will have to play lights out. Pryor will have to be on the ground frequently, pressured into passing errors, and contained when he runs. I think that's too much to ask.

I don't think Purdue has enough of a passing game to keep Ohio State honest. If they crowd the line (which they will) and contain the run (which they will) it's going to be a long day.

A few late scores make it look closer that it will be.

boilerdowd says:

We haven't had to see Rob Henry in a position where he's forced to manufacture points quickly. I think we'll see that Saturday as Purdue will be playing from behind from the beginning. I think aOSU's kickoff team will score a touchdown, or come really close as the ugly ST problems we saw in the pre-conference will rear their ugly heads again.

Purdue's young defensive backfield (specifically Allen, Charlot & Eargle) has never faced receivers as fast as the Buckeye's unit. Tressel will look to establish the run early and then take advantage of the defensive backfield with deep passes...Pryor's greatest strength as a passer.

IF Kerrigan can hit Pryor early and get him thinking, 2 might be out of his game enough to start giving the game away. But, more-than-likely, I think protection will be good for the Buckeye QB for most of the day.

The Buckeyes are good...an angry Buckeye team is great.

I'm a lover of what Coach Hope is doing, and I've been supportive of this team even in the loss vs. Toledo...

But you guys are drunk!

45-0 OSU

Revenge for losing last week.
Revenge for last year.
Homecoming.
A lot to reprove to the CFB nation.

This is the type of game where Tressel teams are scary...very scary.

The only thing we can hope for is a PSU 00 meltdown...

To score 45 points, doesn't O$U need a real actual QB?

Mark, if we're drunk, you're smoking something goooodd.

No way we'll leave Columbus without getting on the board, give this team some credit!

So long as special teams can grasp onto those rays of sunshine that are booming punts and short returns, I think we stand a better chance of this being a defensive battle.

I'm Down Under, so I can blame being upside down for having the stones to say:

Purdue 23, OSU 21

Well, a half-game out of first was a nice place to be for three weeks.

The Minnesota game was great to see, but didn't say much for conference positioning other than Minnesota sucks. The Northwestern game suggested we'd be in their neighborhood and hopefully a little higher, but where is that? The next three weeks should tell us a lot more.

As much as I'd like to see a 3-0 conference record, I don't think it'll happen. Ohio State's defense is very good. Purdue's passing attack is not. It would be great if the midline option and zone reads could keep the Buckeyes off balance, but I'm expecting a lot of second-and-long instead.

Mark, are you just giving a synopsis of my remarks with different wording? Kinda seems like it- Nice job.

A loss is a loss is a loss...and it hasn't been played yet, so anything is possible- from Austin's pick to yours. We'll see tomorrow.

21 to 0 minutes into the second. Awesome. Purdue looks completely outclassed and unprepared. Fire Danny Hope.

zlionsfan said...

Why, it almost looks like a team beset by injuries is struggling on the road against one of the best (sigh) teams in the country.

Oh gee, another FIRE DANNY HOPE comment from The Ox.

Original.

jflandt Until the day he is canned and Morgan Burke gets serious about building a decent football program, I will continue to beat the drum. But hey, I'm sure you'll cling to the victory at Northwestern as a bright spot for the future as this program continues to sink to Colletto like depths of suck.

Does Mark have any Lotto numbers to share? Pretty dead on prediction.

Boy I'm glad I decided not to get up in the middle of the night to follow that game. Time to go drown my sorrows with a day of surfing.

But hey at least IU still sucks right?

The OX said...

boilerdowd Keep drinking the kool aid. At what point do you reasonably expect Coach Hope to start producing a winning team...2018?

Mark said...

I've seen too much Purdue and Big Ten football to not know how this one was going to go.

Now the Hope bashing starts, which is uncalled for...

He's done a good job with the talent he has. Let's hope we're not losing ANOTHER offensive player this week...Dierking and Henry have me worried.

I'll take this loss with a smile if we beat Illini and IU. 6-6, 4-4 and a bowl...that's progress my friends! Hope will get us there, but it will take some patience by the program and the fanbase.

PS-Dowd, if it were a synopsis, you didn't read your own stuff, as it predicted a beatdown, LOL! :P

Hey OX- Name an institution, even an aggressive one, that fires a coach IN, not after his second season. How about one that fires a coach AFTER his second season. Even Notre Dame, who kicked Willingham out too quickly did it after three seasons.

Now, look at Purdue's conservative past. Every single coach they've ever had was given at least one season too many. Take your issue up with Burke...and good luck doing so.

When do I expect them to go to a bowl? Before all the skilled players in this offense went down, I expected it this season. It's different now. Do you honestly not see that? Have you ever watched football before this season?

The OX said...

boilerdowd One can dream...and even though Purdue will have it's head in the sand for the entirety of Hope's deal (I firmly he will be here his entire contract), I'm really not sure why they actually hired him in the first place other than he has Purdue ties.

Look...I hear you about the injuries. But the defense has remained relatively healthy, and OSU had guys wide open all day long. Regression much? They were atrocious. And the O-Line, Hope's "strength" as a coach hasn't developed either. Hope was hired in as the assistant head coach specifically so he could concentrate on recruiting and to date...I'm not really seeing much talent coming in that would lead me to believe he has much of a clue.

boilerdowd said...

I don't disagree with anything you just said...I wasn't a fan of the hire when it happened, and I lament (often) about coaches that I thought Purdue should have taken a serious look at. But, I don't like bashing the guy so early in his tenure.

I want him to succeed because I want Purdue to succeed. I kind of ignore some of the historical indicators I notice that things are never going to be good. He didn't hire himself...he's coaching our alma mater...I'm going to give him a chance- hope you do too. Otherwise, you might be just flat-out miserable. And, the circumstances this season are beyond absurd.

By the way, I'm aware that you have to go back to Akers to have witnessed a shellacking of the proportions of what we saw on Saturday...that's a very bad sign. Plus, the defense was the largest problem, in my opinion. I still am not a fan of Gibbony or Landholm...that's a drum that needs to be beaten, in my opinion.
