It's Notre Dame Week

So we're a month into the college football season and all seems right with our world -- Purdue is 4-0. Also making this a fun football season is the fact that Notre Dame, led by genius Charlie Weis, is 0-4... for the first time in their history. It took the Domers until week four against Michigan State at home to score an offensive touchdown. So I mean, there's bad and then there's.... bad. Not being able to score for a month is kind of horrendous. And you'd think this would make fans of the Golden Dome a bit more humble. You know, like when Michigan lost to App St. and the guys at MGoBlog turned their site pink and full of kittens for several days. They raised the white flag and admitted they had nothing to say to defend their beloved team's performance. But are ND supporters like this at all? Well, take a look at this post from "Her Loyal Sons" and judge for yourself:

It’s bad enough that ND is 0-4 this season. It’s even worse to know that this is Purdue week - The Most Boring Week In College Football Blogging.

If you guys hear anything that we should know and that we should let other ND fans know about Purdue, please feel free to e-mail us. We’re digging. We really are, but Purdue is simply the most boring college football program in the nation, and it’s hard to keep our attention on the task at hand. I got distracted by some pre-Algebra homework problems earlier when I was trying to pull some facts together about whoever their coach might be. I think he sells diabetes equipment or something.

This would be a vastly more interesting week if we’d dump Purdue from the schedule and take on a team like, say, ITT Technical Institute. Do they have a football team? I often wonder why kids go to play at Purdue. What, hate the difficulty of playing for a team that people might actually look up in the Sunday papers? Have a masochistic love of tedium?

Maybe we’ll do a “look back” on what’s happened in the last 4 weeks since, apparently, nothing much will be happening this week.

Wow. I mean, just... wow. The level of obnoxiously blinding arrogance is hard (nay, impossible) to measure here. Are you guys f-cking serious?? Shall we take things a-hole comment by a-hole comment? Okay.

It’s even worse to know that this is Purdue week - The Most Boring Week In College Football Blogging.

Really? In-state rivalries are that boring to you? I suppose so if you know a beatdown is coming. I hate to break this to Notre Dame, but USC doesn't really consider you guys a "rival" the way you do. They see you as a nuisance from the midwest. You don't matter to them, you're a W on their schedule and then they move on to actually challenging opponents. Your best try still wasn't good enough a couple of years ago. Long grass, home-field, hometown refereeing... and you still lost. So why not embrace an in-state rival that has actually been a good series in recent years?

If you guys hear anything that we should know and that we should let other ND fans know about Purdue, please feel free to e-mail us.

Um, oh, hey, I have something: We're 4-0, bitch. We have a top ten offense... in the nation. We're ranked. Our QB has 16 TDs and one pick. We're averaging almost 50 points a game. Want me to keep going? Or should I have started small? Like with: It didn't take us a month to score a touchdown.

Purdue is simply the most boring college football program in the nation, and it’s hard to keep our attention on the task at hand.

Really? The most boring? With an explosive offense and a suspect defense? You think that's boring? The fact that against any good team we'll probably be playing shootouts? That's boring to you clowns?? Right. So now you're just lying.

I got distracted by some pre-Algebra homework problems earlier when I was trying to pull some facts together about whoever their coach might be. I think he sells diabetes equipment or something.

I love that they're doing pre-Algebra at Notre Dame. Well-played, moron. You just made yourself look brilliant. Pre-algebra is something that's done by seventh-graders... outside of South Bend, I imagine. At ND, you can probably major in it. Unless this blog is written by a seventh-grader. Which, given its quality, actually seems possible. And yes, Joe Tiller looks like Wilford Brimley. We've done that joke a million times and he's our own coach. Do you want me to comment on what your coach looks like?

This would be a vastly more interesting week if we’d dump Purdue from the schedule and take on a team like, say, ITT Technical Institute. Do they have a football team?

I'm sure you boys would love to "dump Purdue" from the schedule -- who wants a team that can beat you and perhaps even steal some recruits? You guys only have 6 or 7 gimme wins a season on your schedule so ITT Tech would fit right in with the plan. That way, you can continue to put up the occasional 8 or 9 win season, secure a nice bowl and then get blasted by a far, far superior program. Oh, hey, did you guys know that the last time Notre Dame won ANY bowl game was when Jimmy Clausen was about six years old?

I often wonder why kids go to play at Purdue.

I don't know, maybe because they like to score points? Play in a conference? Not live in South Bend? Shall I go on?

What, hate the difficulty of playing for a team that people might actually look up in the Sunday papers?

What does this even mean? College football is on Saturdays. But these guys haven't seen something resembling college football in a while so it's easy to see how they might be confused.

Have a masochistic love of tedium?

Again, this irrational shot at Purdue for being boring and tedious. I don't get it. You can certainly take shots at us -- lord knows we take shots at our own program all the time and there's plenty to shoot at. But to call us boring? I just don't get it. Nine bowls in ten years. One losing season since Tiller has gotten here. Was Drew Brees boring? Was it boring when Kyle Orton and Taylor Stubblefield embarassed the Domers in South Bend in 2004?

Maybe we’ll do a “look back” on what’s happened in the last 4 weeks since, apparently, nothing much will be happening this week.

This last line made me laugh. You're going to "look back"? At what? At all the insanely awful play from your team this year? Give me a break. You have fun with your look-back. We'll be looking ahead at the rest of our schedule.

Wow, I've run across some dumb blogs before but that one takes the cake. Whoops, Carlie just took my cake. I just love how people treat South Bend as some sort of paradise on earth. Having been there once, well, it ain't.

That ND blogger sucks at life. I hope he enjoys going 0-8.

I'm pretty sure it's a joke. Get it? Big drum is your claim to fame? Midwestern Nowheresville? No press beyond Indiana, ever, for any reason? This is something you Purdue guys should be complaining about more than we do. The fact is you get no national respect, or even attention. And that, despite all your claims of 'wowing offense' and shootouts. We just do it for the fun of it. You guys should be doing it to get some changes in the way the school treats your program...

And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ND is good. They are BAD. Very bad. But bragging about some of those stats is absurd. First, look who you've played: Toledo, EASTERN Illinois, Central Michigan and Minnesota? I mean, being 4-0 is cool and all, but with ND's schedule you'd be lucky to have a single win, and would probably be 0-4 as well. And if your team WASN'T averaging all those points against that cupcake competition, then we'd be worried about you disappearing altogether. And you are ranked in 1 of 3 major polls, at #25. Again, not saying ND is good, but really - is that something to hang your hat on?

boilerdowd said...

So, is it better to get under-covered by the media, or to be the laughing stock of it?

We've always contended that Purdue does not get the attention it deserves nationally. That said, if you'd read a bit down, we don't think Purdue has done enough, at this point to be ranked. Honestly, regardless of outcome, I think it'd be fair to say Purdue doesn't deserve to be ranked even after this weekend...we still will have not played anybody.

All media outlets and opinions aside, an unbiased, number-crunching computer program has Purdue at 23...and the genius' team at 114.

Anonymous said...

Why are you basing your argument on ND being bad? My first sentence is that ND is bad. "Very bad" were my words, no contention there from me. I dont get how the relative rankings matter here at all. The question is why Purdue is being mocked on an ND blog even when ND is terrible. And I provided my answer. It has nothing to do with success on the field, but the complete lack of caring about Purdue's performance by anyone outside of Purdue. That is what we're making fun of. So we say 'no one cares about you' and your response is 'we're ranked higher'? I don't understand the logic (or lack thereof). And ND is only a media punchline today because the program spent so much time being THE face of college football. Purdue football is barely the face of Purdue football given its national/conference irrelevance.

And you should enjoy this current situation and media circus while you can, because it won't be this way for long. We're only just removed from 9-3, 10-3 seasons. And we'll be back there soon.

It'd be awful hard for Saturday's college games to appear in a Saturday morning paper.

Just sayin'.

boilerdowd said...

So, is the goal of the game to win, or is it to get attention? Purdue's boring everyone with

While Clausen makes waves off the field with female punk rock singer hair, Hummer limos and high school bling, he bores the daughters of our mother by leading her offense to two touchdowns in 4 games. But, sacks are super-duper exciting. Honestly though, I wouldn't know if that's exciting or not because Purdue offense's has not had such a streak in the last ten years.

While UND fans are bored, Ohio State fans are aware of Purdue...maybe because they're still playing for something. I don't know.

By the way, Purdue is in the Big Ten conference...once again, not a big deal to domers. BUT, UND is winning at a 40% clip over the past 5 years versus Big Ten conference. Where would that put Excitement U? They'd finish just above IU at number ten (out of twelve).

Anonymous said...

once again, you are totally missing the argument. listen, and read slowly, this time you might get it. "Purdue is boring." that is the statement. this has nothing to do with Notre Dame. this has nothing to do with records. this has to do with people caring (or in this case not caring) about your program. you can't keep refuting this statement with 'but ND sucks' and 'our record is better' and 'ND wouldnt do well in the Big Ten'. These points have no meaning in this discussion. Your job is to try to tell me why Purdue is not boring. But you can't do so, because it's impossible. I mean, Purdue sucks meaning from life, so how can you possibly make it interesting?

No one said the point is to be interesting. I don't think it is, and I'm pretty sure fans in general just want their teams to win. I do, we do. We just said that Purdue is NOT interesting.

ND's losing season so far is generating more talk, buzz and ratings than the best season Purdue ever could dream of, and that's a fact. So say whatever you want about the state of ND football today. I can't, and won't, refute it. It will also change shortly. But go ahead and say what you want - because it won't change the basic fact: nobody cares what you're saying, because you're from Purdue.

Anonymous said...

Nobody cares what he's saying, yet you're up at 1:40 AM posting on this blog? So what if Purdueis boring, I knew that before I went there. Just because ESPN isn't camped out at Ross-Ade for a pretty good 4 - 0 team against a bad 0 -4 team doesn't mean nobody cares. Here's a quote from Stewart Mandel:

'The one potential wild card: Purdue, which is 4-0 and putting up an average 527 yards of offense but has also played Toledo, Eastern Illinois, Central Michigan and Minnesota. Ohio State visits the Boilers in two weeks.'

So please just stop it. Just because Purdue isn't on the front page of cnnsi.com doesn't mean 'no one cares'.

J Money said...

Ahhh... so it's US who don't "get" your stellar argument, the crux of which is "Purdue is boring," a subjective and opinion-based statement that cannot be argued against with facts (because you dismiss them all, bravely posting as "anonymous").

So where does that leave us? Well, I guess where we started with this post.... basically asking, "what the hell?" I mean, to say "nobody cares outside of Purdue" is pretty moronic. Does anyone care about Michigan State outside of Lansing? Anyone care about Illinois outside of Champagne? Did anyone care about Ohio State when Kirk Herbstreit was QB? The answers are no and people care more when a program reaches national relevance and continued success. We've admitted that many times and, as I said, we rip on our own program for not doing what it takes to be elite. Yet you don't acknowledge that and simply keep telling us we're boring, which, again, makes no sense and is not fact-based. It's your opinion.

More to the point, our post was simply to illustrate just one of many, many examples of the arrogance and obnixous bluster exhibited by ND "fans."

Enjoy being an underdog to Duke.

J Money said...

Oh, and Bad Kermit: Saturday's games DO in fact appear in Saturday morning's paper. The matchups, the lines, it's all there. I guess you're referring to the scores of those games, to which I will certainly concede they'd be hard to get into the Sat morn paper. :-)

However, I doubt many of us check the Sunday paper for our scores in 2007.

Anonymous said...

It's wasn't 1:40AM where I live. Not everyone lives in the Midwest.

I will 'just stop it' since it's been requested. But kind of sad for you guys - this discussion is the most excitement this blog has ever, or will ever see. Maybe Purdue fans just like it nice and boring? Okay, fine, have it your way.

J Money said...

Oh no! He's going to stop posting anonymously and isn't going to post a SIXTH comment saying the exact same thing the arrogant blog we quoted already said: we're boring. Yes, yes, we get it. Your uneducated, arrogant, smarmy, ND-blinded opinion is that Purdue is boring.

I'm sure it was boring when Drew Brees was there, beating Michigan and OSU and taking us to the Rose Bowl... when we were VERY relevant and people were talking about us. As I admitted, that's not the case right now but that doesn't equal "boring," in most people's opinions.

Sure was boring, though, when Orton dropped 40+ on your heads in South Bend. Boring, boring, boring.

Sure is boring watching us put up 50 points a game. Sure, we're playing early-season mediocre opponents, but didn't a mediocre opponent put a hurting on Michigan? Who then got better by pasting the Domers? Ah, yes, now THAT was excitement! Seeing ND almost put up 100 yards of total offense! Wheee!

Let me get back to being loyal to the school and program we love... boring as it is, I like following my alma mater and being proud of it rather than following the team NBC tells me to follow, and being led blindly around by Fat Charlie, the great white hope.

boilerdowd said...

We're so boring that dude is sitting on his hands and reading this right now..."Self- don't respond, these guys are boring. Their alma mater's boring...yet, I can't stop reading..." "Must resist urge to stay on this boring site with boring topics..." "Must go back to UND site where we can stroke eachother about how we're still important and exciting despite the fact that we haven't had an important win in December or January in about 15 years..."

"Boring."

By the way, it was only 12:40 am where he was...So suck it!!

Also, Ms. Anonymous, we had an on-going debate w/ another boring Big Ten school guy this summer that lasted about a week. Sure, like you, he wouldn't acknowledge who he was, so maybe that was you too...In fact, I'm going to go with that- You're actually obsessed with us and our ho-hum, run-of-the-mill, sleepy, boring team and equally vanilla, bland and BORING site.

Lastly, thanks for stopping by (over and over)!

Anonymous said...

Whew! Thanks for correcting me, it was 12:40 AM when he was posting, so that makes it okay. Now if you'll excuse me, it's almost time for me to leave my boring job, get in my boring car, go to my boring house and see my boring wife and boring daughters. I just wonder what my 4 year old will say when I tell her she's boring? She'll probably yawn at boring old dad.

boilerdowd said...

You make me tired just speaking of your tedious life...Why can't you be more exciting like lady anonymous?

I'm sorry, it's just that when I was born, the doctor told my parent's, 'It's boring!'. Once that was said, they knew I was headed for Purdue. Even though I was born in Wisconsin.

And can we come up with a nickname for Ms. Anonyomous? How about Annie?

Anonymous said...

Actually, I changed my mind. Since Weiss is as big as a planet and brave little anonymous' world revolves around him, let's call it 'Moonbeam'.

J Money said...

Okay, I am unable to suppress my laughing now... this is funny. In a boring sort of way.

I've edited the site accordingly, since we're been put in our place. See you if you can find the changes -- sort of like a "Highlights" magazine. (Or, you know, graduate level classes at ND.)

Annie here. Hi guys!

Just two things to contend, since your response to the 'boring' theory is "whine whine whine, you guys suck, blah blah blah" for the most part.

1) Uneducated? How can a Purdue alum call an ND alum uneducated? Oh, and that only represents 1 of my 2 degrees - both from schools much more exciting than Purdue

2) I was in Korea at the time. Not 12:40 am. It's 13 hours ahead. Go figure that one out, if your Purdue-educated minds can fathom the math.

3) NBC tells me nothing. Except that Heroes is more interesting than Purdue football.

4) It is sad that you find your daughters boring. The problem is much worse than I expected, or implied - I was only referring to the Purdue football program, not your home life. I am sincerely sorry that that is the case.

Anonymous said...

Moonbeam! I missed you. Okay, so you're up at 736 AM posting on a 'boring' blog. That's still pretty sad. And two degrees and you can't tell sarcasm? I find it very exciting when my 4 month old throws up on me at 230 AM (or 330 PM in Korea).

J Money said...

Annie from Korea says: "your response to the 'boring' theory is 'whine whine whine, you guys suck, blah blah blah' for the most part."

Ah, no ma'am. That's not what we said at all. If you really want to talk about whiners, well, you just may want to look at your own fan base. In fact, we simply stopped trying to make an argument against you since it's impossible to argue against a genius such as yourself.

Clearly, your argument of "boring" is far and above what we mere Purdue grads can handle. It's very deep, and philosophical and impossible to be argued against with facts. So we stopped trying and just starting admitting how boring we are. What more do you want?

Anonymous said...

Seriously, comments calling Notre Dame fans rude and arrogant in the midst of the insulting, pompous attitude displayed here is somewhat laughable. Not as laughable as the Irish's effort this year, I'll grant you that. And please do not bring up Drew Brees' victory over ND in 2004. That might make an ND fan bring up the numerous National Chamionships, Heismans, etc. Let's stick with the present. ND sucks. Purdue is, well, we don;t really know yet because they've only played JV teams. This will be settled on the field, and one team will have bragging rights... at least for a year. Can we at least agree on that?

Anonymous said...

Come on, we're a bunch of dummies that had to go to a public university. And worse, a land grant university! I'm amazed I can walk and talk at the same time. So to please our better, I'll do the following:

1) Burn the rest of my football tickets because certainly no one wants to see Purdue play boring 52 - 35 games. Yawn.
2) My wife and I will burn our Purdue dipolmas because they ain't worth crap.
3) Find Notre Dame alums to take our daughters because they are clearly being abused by living with Purdue alums. Plus my wife's dad is a Purdue alum, so that just makes it worse.
4) Get on the next flight to Korea and move in with Moonbeam. That way he/she/it can show us the errors of our ways and hopefully make us productive members of society. Even with our limited skills.
5) Laugh at Moonbeam for taking itself so seriously because he/she/it went to NOTRE DAME!

Anonymous said...

You are correct Sean, I guess Notre Dame fans bring out the worst in me. Oh, it was Kyle Orton that played in the 2004 game. Drew Brees never won at Notre Dame.

Anonymous said...

If by hometown referees you mean Pac-10 crew, then yes, hometown referees.

Anonymous said...

Moonbeam is back. You missed me, admit it.

why are you all so ready to say that i am so much smarter than you all? is there an inferiority complex here? i have actually not once said that Purdue produces morons or sub-human mongoloids as you are all saying. the only thing i questioned was someone saying that an ND grad is uneducated. that's an oxymoron, and impossible.

you guys have made the leap from our saying Purdue is boring, to our saying you're all idiots. frankly, we never said anything about you or your fans. we just said your Football Program is boring. the logic is that no one ever gives them any coverage, which means people (beyond W. Lafeyette) aren't interested. if you agree with that, what is driving all of these continued comments? I will tell you - it's exciting to you guys. this is the one week out of the year when people will actually pay attention to Purdue football. and that's a week when you're facing an 0-4 team. enjoy it, it will be over shortly.

make fun of my moonbeam all you want, and fall on your fake swords pretending that i have insulted you and your intelligence personally, but we're just making fun of your lack of media exposure beyond your little corner of Indiana. and you should be more upset about that being the case, than our pointing it out.

boilerdowd said...

Obsession- It's more than a scent from Calvin Klein, it's a way of life for Ms. Annie the Domer.

Thanks for your never-ending patronage.

Now THAT proves Purdue isn't boring. Sarcasm there if you didn't catch it.

You're just giving this dude (or woman) fuel for the fire by not showing him/her why he/she's wrong. I don't think that Purdue football is all that boring, but you "fans" don't do the school justice by defending it so weakly. "That blog sucks" and "ND isn't exciting" are pretty lame responses.

boilerdowd said...

Can you guys read?

J Money said...

CincyDomer -- We do indeed defend our position, with facts even! And then we're told that we're flat wrong and Purdue is just boring. And never ever ever did we say "that blog sucks." We just took umbrage with what they were saying since it was completely out of their asses and nothing but a random attack -- an attack without fact basis!

We say it here all the time: Purdue has a lot of shortcomings and we're among the first to point them out. And we welcome others to point them out... but to just take shots and talk down at us, displaying arrogance and ignorance and refusing to read what we actually write... well, that's when we just stopped arguing. It's your right to not read it and to simply be blindly loyal to whatever school you wish -- but it's also our right to call out the bullshit when we see it.

Anonymous said...

rivalry? Notre Dame has one 17 of the last 21 games, Purdue has never won a championship and your current "top ten offense" is pretty good against your 1-AA schedule. It hardly even matters what ND's record is this year, Purdue will always be subordinate to ND because no one (especially top recruits) gives a flying fuck about Purdue.

And regarding USC, look at our record against them in the ten years before this losing streak. Maybe you should try scheduling someone outside the "Big" Ten and you'll see how bad you are against a team with real speed.

boilerdowd said...

Purdue plays has played PAC 10, SEC, ACC & Big 12 opponents at least once every other year (because of bowl games) and has faired pretty well...Further, MAC speed is probably a bit better than Duke, Army & Navy...But you're right, the Big Ten is horrible. Two current top-ten teams come from that slow, crappy conference.

While I don't know what it means when you say, "Notre Dame has 'one' 17 of the last 21." I do know that since this Purdue coach has been here, he's 4-6...that's ten years, or four coaches in UND terms (Davie, O'Leary, Willingham & The Big Manatee)...the series is 2-2, the last 4 years...I don't know if I'd call that subordinate.

Regarding your comment on the offense, I'd agree that the competition is less-than-stellar...no arguing that. I'm sure it's much more gratifying to be LAST in the nation versus good opponents than in the top-ten versus lousy teams.

Regardless, we shall see if Purdue's offense is worth talking about.

Great point about the recruits- obviously, as seen on the field the last three games, great high school talent automatically equates to a tremendously strong college team.

Fans like you are why people like me dislike Notre Dame- You're still arrogant in spite of the fact that your team stinks...At least the other Domer who was on here earlier could admit that UND was not good.

Thanks for representing your favorite team fittingly.

Nothing better than hearing whiny Notre Dame fans cry and bitch about how good they USED to be!

Over the past ten years, Notre Dame is the second most successful school in... Indiana. Over that span, Purdue is 79-49; Notre Dame is 75-51.

Keep whining, ND fans! It makes our day! Boiler up!

Here's a video of a classic ND screw up to give us the victory in 99:

I also liked how our anonymous, foul-mouthed poster challenged us to play anyone (anyone decent, I guess is the implication) from outside the Big Ten... apparently, Notre Dame doesn't qualify? Ha! Way to talk yourself into a corner, genius.

And actually, that wasn't us who put up a '99 video link, though we definitely enjoy those sorts of things. And hey, if ND can point to the "ten years before this losing streak" to USC, then we can point to whatever we want. Or we can keep it in this season and just point to the records.

Also loved -- LOVED -- the "Second best school... in Indiana" stat. Awesome!
