Trick Play Which I Still Don't Understand

You may have seen this trick play making its way around the intertubes recently. It's from a middle school game in -- of course -- Texas.

I still don't understand how this fooled anyone. Even 14 year old football players should have found it peculiar that the QB takes the ball and begins purposefully striding across the line of scrimmage.

That said, I'd like to see Purdue try it against Michigan. Given the Wolverine defense, it might work.

Hey! It's Enrico Pallazzo!

Sometimes I'm reminded of how young some of our readers are. And this isn't a bad thing or a dig -- I think you guys are all great. It's just that sometimes the 10-15 year age gap between us here at BS and you youthful folks is significant in terms of pop culture.

I know we've all got our favorite movies and there are funny scenes we all remember. Well, today, since it's summertime and summertime generally means baseball, I wanted to share some of the funniest baseball scenes I think have ever been put on film, care of The Naked Gun from 1988. It's hard to believe this hilarious movie was 22 years ago, but it was. So if you haven't seen these, Leslie Neilsen is a bumbling detective who is trying to find a killer and as part of that assumes the identity of a major league umpire and then comes to enjoy it.

See the video, after the jump.

The Various USA-centric Reactions to Donovan's Game-Winner

For those who haven't seen this, it's a pretty awesome compilation of reactions to the USA's game-winning (and Group-clinching, moving on-clinching, USA soccer-saving, etc.) goal by Landon Donovan in the 91st minute on Wednesday.

First, enjoy.

Okay, yes, some of it's a little cornpone and I'm not sure I needed to see the weird people in their basements who were evidently taking video of....themselves?  But nonetheless, I don't see how you can't get a bit of a chill seeing reactions like this all over the country (and, really, the world). And these were just the people who had footage of their reactions. This same thing happened in our TV lounge at work.

It doesn't matter if you're not a big soccer fan or you're one of these clowns who likes to purport that "nobody cares about soccer." That's ignorant and simply not true. Regardless, nationalism brings lots of people together.

Oh, and the best part? The video was compiled by Robby Donoho, a Purdue senior.

USA-Ghana, tomorrow at 2:30 Eastern.

What The French, Toast?

Well, I'm feeling frisky as college football is just about upon us (though as Purdue fans, it's kind of like dry-humping for us.... no real action yet) and it got me thinking about the fact that once college and pro football gets started, we get to see some rather amusing commercials again. Sure, they'll be drilled into us until we can't stand them anymore, but there are always a few that are clever enough and funny enough that I, for one, don't tire of them.

Earlier this week on the Big Ten Blogger Google Feed, there was some debate over one of the B10B guys mocking another, blah blah blah.... after an awkward silence, one of the other guys, from the Nittany Line, says "You Stinky McStinkface!" To which I responded, "You lintlicker!" To which Brad from Maize and Blue Nation replied, "What the french, toast?" All of these, for those of you uninitiated, come from one single hilarious commercial:

It doesn't matter how many times I watch that -- I always laugh.

And as for other amusing commericals, I always loved this one from Bud Light, though I don't ever recall it actually being on our airwaves:

And for a tip as to what my wife deals with by living with me, the following commercial is one that I quote all the time:

And, of course, a classic I've always loved:

Hope you've enjoyed today's tour through profanity and fart jokes.

Enjoying Detroit's Agony (and other baseball notes)

Just to show that I don't only enjoy rooting for teams from Boston to lose, I wanted to comment on the current Detroit Tigers situation. As you may or may not know, they're now at 0-7 and have two more games in Boston to deal with, so they easily could leave Boston at an unthinkable 0-9 to kick off their once-promising season. And I have to ask... am I the only one who finds this kind of all-eyes-on-them skid to open the season kind of car-crash-like? I mean, I just can't stop checking out Tigers scores and I don't care about the Tigers at all. Don't like them, don't dislike them... frankly, I don't care about them at all.

But seeing them continue to lose, first to the Royals, then to the White Sox... and now to the Red Sox. Well, yeah, I'm not even rooting for them to beat Boston. I want to see how far this can go, mainly because I want to see what happens as this gets worse... is it possible that Jim Leyland could be fired? Nobody's saying that yet since he's been looked at as the savior of Tigers baseball, and probably rightfully so. But the last team that started a season 0-7? The 2003 Tigers, who wound up righting the ship to the tune of 43-112 the rest of the way. Yowsas.

No, of course the Tigs won't have a season like that. In fact, I think they'll still challenge for the playoffs, but it's already become an uphill climb. Sure, they're not real far out, but the mental block on starting 0-and-whatever is simply greater than if you had a decent start and lost seven in a row in June, you know? People would ask what was wrong with the team if that happened, but it wouldn't be the cresendo of panic Detroit is now feeling.

I just find it fascinating.

--------------------------------------

In New York, the Yankees are now dealing with Derek Jeter being slightly injured and the inevitable questions about A-Rod moving back to short, a position he hasn't played more than a few innings at since 2003.

Right now, they're going with Wilson Betemit at short, a guy who is far less mobile than Jeter, whom people are beginning to believe is a liability at short thanks to various fielding metrics that even the creators of admit are rough. Fielding prowess is simply hard to measure accurately and I think there's a bit of a backlash against Jeter and the Yankees and everyone is now piling on and saying he's a terrible defensive shortstop. He's not terrible, let's start there. Yet comments persist, and I saw in SI's baseball preview a suggestion that Jeter should consider moving to first base.

The whole obsession with A-Rod moving back to short perplexes me, though. ARod is now 225 lbs and not exactly as nimble as he once was, plus he's played four seasons exclusively at third. Why would it make sense to move him again, especially to put him in a spot where he's more likely to get injured? Seems dumb to me and simply another situation where the New York media wants to make a soapl opera issue out of the Yankees.

I admit, it's intriguing, especially since Jeter hasn't missed any significant time since ARod's been on the team... makes me wonder if he'd really fight a trip to the DL for fear of losing his job.

---------------------------------------

Let's all calm down about the Orioles, too. They're off to a 6-1 start but this is just as hollow as the Tigers 0-7 start. The team isn't this good. Beating the Rays and Rangers isn't exactly a difficult challenge. And besides, the O's have gotten off to good starts a number of times in recent years... let's see where they are at the All-Star Break.

---------------------------------------

And just to reward you for slogging through my baseball drivel for the week, here's a completely unrelated YouTube clip to brighten your day. There's nothing better than idiots in cars not understanding how the equoation {ice + braking + misplaced confidence} works out.... seriously, this is kind of incredible.

Roger Clemens Is Zestfully Clean

You know, sometimes you're just out stumbling around Youtube looking for misplaced porn that got through their sensors and you come upon a real gem. With all the talk about Roger Clemens being "dirty" as a result of his apparent performance-enhancing, this clip should really...well... it should at least make you stop thinking about steroids for a little while because you'll be too busy trying to figure out who thought this was a good idea.

I also like that he's not even necessarily getting the most camera time. Some nobody extras are equaling him.

So there you go. He's clean. Zestfully so.
